Vanderbilt Health’s Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute (PBPRI) at the Bill Wilkerson Center is seeking a Physical Therapist to join our Outpatient Adult Neuro-Rehabilitation team.

This role offers the opportunity to work in a specialized setting treating patients with neurological, vestibular, and balance disorders, alongside an interdisciplinary team dedicated to evidence-based, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive evaluations to develop individualized rehabilitation diagnoses and treatment plans

  • Assess and treat patients with neurological conditions, dizziness, balance impairments, and vestibular dysfunction

  • Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to establish and implement care plans

  • Deliver evidence-based interventions and adjust treatment based on patient progress

  • Promote safe return to home, community, and vocational environments

  • Apply vestibular rehabilitation techniques when appropriate

  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation

  • Provide patient and caregiver education to support long-term outcomes

  • May support supervision of assistants, students, and support staff

Core Clinical Competencies

  • Treatment Planning and Goal Setting

  • Develop functional, measurable short- and long-term goals

  • Coordinate referrals to additional services as needed

  • Preferred: Incorporate vestibular rehabilitation strategies, including balance progression, gaze stabilization, and habituation exercises

  • Patient Evaluation

  • Perform comprehensive evaluations using standardized tests and functional outcome measures

  • Communicate findings effectively to patients and care teams

  • Preferred: Experience with vestibular and balance assessments

  • Treatment Implementation

  • Deliver skilled therapy aligned with the plan of care

  • Modify interventions based on patient response and outcomes

  • Utilize evidence-based practices and clinical protocols

  • Preferred: Experience with BPPV assessment, balance retraining, and fall prevention strategies

  • Documentation

  • Complete accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation

  • Ensure documentation reflects patient progress and skilled interventions

  • Preferred: Experience documenting vestibular evaluations and treatments

  • Patient and Caregiver Education

  • Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment, safety, and home exercise programs

  • Adapt communication style to meet patient needs

  • Preferred: Education related to vestibular conditions and symptom management

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program

  • Tennessee Physical Therapy license or eligibility to obtain prior to start

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with adult neurologic and vestibular populations

  • Strong clinical reasoning skills and commitment to patient-centered care

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or strong interest in vestibular rehabilitation

  • Experience treating patients with dizziness, balance, and neurologic conditions

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Analyzes comprehensive information from formal and informal assessment that is pertinent to the patient's care and management to determine a rehabilitation treatment diagnosis.
• Collaborates with stakeholders in establishing the plan of care, coordinates and implements care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the rehabilitation continuum.
• Applies appropriate, evidence-based interventions to ensure effective outcomes and re-evaluates performance to assess patient's progress towards goals.
• Employs strategies to promote successful return to home, community, and school/vocational environments.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
• Rehab Therapist Patient Documentation (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates proficiency in documentation practices. Documents in the appropriate templates and utilizes only approved abbreviations within patient documentation. Meets institutional standards for quality and timeliness of documentation.
• Rehabilitation Therapist Patient Evaluation (Novice): Demonstrates proficiency in evaluating patients with physical deficits including impairments, developmental disabilities, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function by obtaining information pertinent to the assessment and administering and scoring standardized tests and objective measures of deficit areas. Selects appropriate measures and performs a functional assessment to document patient's status requiring skilled therapy. Interprets the results of the assessment and their significance to the patient, family, referring physician and other members of the health care team.
• Treatment Planning & Goal Setting (Novice): Demonstrates sufficient proficiency in developing a plan of care that incorporates treatment interventions focused on meeting objective goals. Develops and documents patient focused short and long term goals that are functional and measurable. Identifies the need for and referral to other services, as needed.
• Treatment Implementation (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates proficiency in providing treatment consistent with physician prescription and established plan of care. Able to modify treatment plan as needed to demonstrate provision of skilled therapy services including progression of treatment throughout course of care, and revision of treatment interventions of goals not met. May supervise and direct certified athletic trainers (PT only), physical therapist / occupational therapist assistants, technicians and volunteers and students. Selects and follows correct protocol for care and utilize evidence based treatments.
Physical/Occupational Therapist Patient Education (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates proficiency in communicating functional impact of assessment findings, treatment interventions, treatment planning diagnosis, and disease process. Considers the communication needs/level of understanding of audience and may share appropriate information/literature.
