Nurse Extern II - Med Surg

The Nurse Extern role is designed to provide expanded clinical experience for professional (RN) nursing students and to assist the Registered Nursing staff by performing patient care activities, which includes participating in patient care planning, implementation, observation and evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to a Registered Nurse.

• Accurately checks patient’s blood sugar and documents results as ordered (all values are correctly reported to attending nurse).
• Obtains vital signs appropriately based on patient’s age and condition.  Reports abnormal findings immediately to attending or charge nurse.   
• Coordinates care with other health professionals. 
• Provides appropriate treatment in emergency situations as they arise (i.e. codes, patient falls). 
• Notifies nurse of changes in patient’s condition.
• Performs related duties as required. 

• Required:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Licensure/Certification: American Heart Association BLS CPR certification required. Must be obtained within 7 days of hire.
