About the Position

PRT is hiring Field Welders / Boilermakers for industrial tank construction and steel fabrication projects, primarily in California and at project sites throughout the United States.

This hands-on role includes welding, steel layout, fit-up, tank assembly, rigging support, and material handling. We are looking for dependable people who take pride in their workmanship, follow safe work practices, and work well with a field crew.

Candidates with welding, boilermaking, tank construction, or related steel fabrication experience are encouraged to apply. Assignments will reflect demonstrated skills, qualifications, and project requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform field welding on tank and steel components within your qualifications and applicable project welding procedures.
  • Measure, lay out, fit, align, and assemble tank plates, structural steel, roof components, nozzles, and reinforcing pads.
  • Prepare joints and bevels; perform cutting, grinding, drilling, and surface preparation.
  • Read and follow fabrication drawings, weld symbols, assembly details, and field instructions appropriate to your experience level.
  • Safely operate welding equipment, grinders, torches, magnetic drills, and other hand and power tools.
  • Assist with rigging, lifting, positioning, and securing steel components under the direction of qualified crew members.
  • Use chain falls, come-alongs, slings, shackles, hoists, and jacks within your training and assigned responsibilities.
  • Check measurements, alignment, fit-up, and workmanship; report discrepancies or quality concerns promptly.
  • Load, unload, stage, and organize materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Follow required PPE, fall protection, hot work, and confined-space procedures.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and job hazard assessments and immediately report unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and support safe, efficient crew operations.
  • Experienced employees may help train and guide less-experienced crew members.

Qualifications

  • Experience in field welding, boiler making, industrial tank construction, steel fabrication, or related construction work.
  • For welding assignments, demonstrated proficiency in the welding processes and positions required for the project.
  • Stick welding (SMAW) and/or flux-core welding (FCAW) experience preferred.
  • Ability to use measuring tools and perform layout and fit-up appropriate to the assigned work.
  • Ability to read drawings and weld symbols, or foundational knowledge with a willingness to develop these skills.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
  • Reliable attendance, clear communication, and the ability to follow instructions and work as part of a crew.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites throughout the United States.

Preferred Experience

  • Two or more years of relevant field welding, boiler making, or steel fabrication experience for advanced assignments.
  • Industrial tank construction and assembly experience.
  • Welding certifications relevant to the assigned work.
  • Basic rigging knowledge or rigging certifications.
  • Experience working at heights and in confined spaces using required safety procedures.

Candidates with less experience may be considered for developing boilermaker assignments based on available openings and demonstrated skills.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Work takes place at industrial construction sites, tank farms, and fabrication yards. Essential duties include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, and working at heights or in confined spaces.

The position involves regularly lifting and moving materials and equipment, including items weighing 50–75 pounds, using appropriate lifting assistance and equipment as needed. Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Employees work outdoors in varying weather conditions and may encounter noise, dust, welding fumes, sparks, and heavy equipment. Required protective equipment may include a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, fall protection, and respiratory protection appropriate to the assignment.
