Survey Field TechnicianLaunch Your Career in Surveying

The Survey Field Technician supports the crew chief in completing boundary, ALTA/NSPS, topographic, control, and construction surveys. This is a hands-on field position involving survey equipment, accurate measurements, clear notes, and careful attention to safety. The technician works under the direction of a crew chief and Professional Land Surveyor, with opportunities to take on more responsibility as skills develop.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist with daily field assignments and understand the work planned before leaving for a site.
  • Set up and operate GNSS equipment, robotic total stations, levels, data collectors, and other survey tools according to experience and direction.
  • Locate and document monuments, improvements, utilities, terrain features, and other items required for the survey.
  • Keep accurate notes, sketches, photographs, and point descriptions so the office team can understand the field work.
  • Perform routine measurement and data checks; tell the crew chief about discrepancies, damaged monuments, unsafe conditions, or information that appears to be missing.
  • Help transfer and organize field data and, when qualified, assist with basic office or CAD tasks.
  • Charge, clean, inventory, and care for equipment; help keep the crew vehicle ready for field work.
  • Follow company safety procedures and site-specific requirements, including those for traffic and construction sites.

Qualifications

Education and Credentials

High school diploma or equivalent. Survey coursework or an associate degree is helpful but not required.

Experience

  • Survey field experience is preferred, particularly experience operating a total station, GNSS equipment, or a data collector.
  • Two or more years is preferred for someone expected to contribute immediately.
  • Candidates with less experience and strong relevant skills will also be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow field instructions, record measurements carefully, and ask questions when information does not agree.
  • Ability to read basic maps, plats, and construction plans, or to learn with training.
  • Dependability, attention to detail, and the ability to work well with a crew.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain, walk and stand for extended periods, and carry survey equipment and supplies.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites; some assignments may require overnight travel.
