Safety & Risk Manager — Job Description

Position summary

Pathmark Transportation is hiring a Safety & Risk Manager to own workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management across our warehouse and transportation operations. This person keeps our people safe, our sites OSHA-compliant, and our insurance and workers' compensation programs lean and well-managed.

Key responsibilities

Insurance and risk management

  • Identify, assess, and prioritize operational, property, liability, and cargo risks across the business.
  • Manage the commercial insurance program with brokers and carriers, including general liability, auto/fleet, property, cargo, umbrella/excess, and warehouse legal liability.
  • Lead annual renewals: prepare underwriting submissions, review coverage terms and limits, and recommend program structure and deductibles.
  • Review customer and vendor contracts for indemnification, insurance requirements, and certificates of insurance (COIs).
  • Track total cost of risk and report trends to leadership.

Workers' compensation

  • Manage the workers' compensation program from first report of injury through claim closure.
  • Partner with the carrier and adjusters to manage claims and control costs.
  • Run return-to-work and modified-duty programs to reduce lost time.
  • Monitor experience modification rate (EMR), loss runs, and reserves; drive strategies to lower claim frequency and severity.

Incident investigation and reporting

  • Lead root-cause investigations for injuries, near misses, and property damage.
  • Track corrective actions to completion and share lessons learned across sites.
  • Report safety KPIs (TRIR, DART, lost-time rate, near-miss reporting, EMR) to leadership monthly.

Warehouse and operational safety

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company safety program across all warehouses, cross-docks, and yards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and hazard assessments covering powered industrial trucks (forklifts, reach trucks, pallet jacks), racking, conveyors, dock doors and trailer restraints, loading/unloading, and pedestrian traffic flow.
  • Build and enforce written programs, including lockout/tagout, hazard communication, PPE, emergency action and fire prevention, heat illness prevention, and ergonomics.
  • Partner with site leaders to embed safety into daily operations through huddles, job safety analyses, and safety committees.

OSHA and regulatory compliance

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA general industry standards (29 CFR 1910) and applicable state-plan requirements.
  • Maintain OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 injury and illness records and submit electronic injury data as required.
  • Serve as the primary contact during OSHA inspections; manage citations, abatement, and corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate with fleet or transportation leaders on DOT/FMCSA safety requirements where warehouse and transportation operations intersect.

Training and culture

  • Deliver and track required safety training, including new-hire orientation, forklift operator certification, and annual refreshers.
  • Coach supervisors and managers on safety leadership and accountability.
  • Promote a reporting culture where employees raise hazards and near misses without fear of retaliation.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, risk management, industrial engineering, or a related field — or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience with commercial insurance lines (GL, auto, property, cargo, umbrella) and the renewal process.
  • 5+ years of safety experience in warehousing, distribution, logistics, or manufacturing, including at least 2 years in a management or program-owner role.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards and recordkeeping, with direct experience supporting or managing an OSHA inspection.
  • Hands-on experience managing workers' compensation claims and return-to-work programs.
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry card (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
  • Ability to travel to company sites as needed.

Preferred qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST).
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation.
  • Experience in a multi-site or 3PL environment.
  • Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations for fleet operations.
  • Certified forklift trainer, or experience running a powered industrial truck training program.
  • Experience with safety management or EHS software (e.g., incident tracking, training records, inspections).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

Skills and competencies

  • Translates regulations into practical, floor-level procedures that busy operations teams will follow.
  • Influences without authority — earns credibility with frontline associates, supervisors, and executives alike.
  • Analyzes loss data, claim trends, and leading indicators to target the biggest risks first.
  • Communicates clearly in writing and in front of groups; comfortable training a shift of 50 or briefing the C-suite.
  • Stays calm and organized during incidents, inspections, and claims disputes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and reporting tools.

Working conditions

  • Split between office and warehouse floor; regular exposure to active warehouse environments, including noise, temperature extremes, and moving equipment.
  • Must be able to walk large facilities, climb stairs and ladders, and wear required PPE.
  • Occasional after-hours response to serious incidents.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary range: $80,000– $100,000, based on experience
  • Eligible for Quarterly Management Bonus
  • Benefits Offered - Health, dental, vision, 401(k) match, and PTO
