Job description
DIS-TRAN Steel is seeking an experienced Design Engineer with a Civil or Structural Engineering background to help design the steel structures that support high-voltage substations, transmission lines, and distribution systems across the country.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of technically challenging projects, work directly with customers and cross-functional teams, and see your designs move from calculations and drawings to fully fabricated structures in the field. If you enjoy solving complex structural problems and want your work to have a visible, lasting impact, this may be the right opportunity for you.
As a Design Engineer, you’ll perform and coordinate the structural design of steel utility structures while ensuring each solution meets customer specifications, applicable codes, project schedules, and manufacturing requirements.
Responsibilities include:
-
Perform conceptual, preliminary, and final design calculations for high-voltage transmission, distribution, and substation steel structures.
-
Design and interpret drawings for transmission and substation structures.
-
Develop preliminary designs and weight takeoffs to support estimating and proposal activities.
-
Use PLS-POLE, STAAD.Pro, and other engineering tools to analyze and design steel structures.
-
Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, applicable design codes, industry standards, and internal quality requirements.
-
Review project requirements and identify technical risks, missing information, or potential design concerns.
-
Solve complex structural, fabrication, construction, and compliance-related challenges.
-
Coordinate schedules, calculations, drawings, revisions, and technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
-
Partner with Project Management, Detailing, Estimating, Sales, Production, Quality, and other teams to move projects successfully from design through fabrication.
-
Answer technical questions from shop, field, and project personnel.
-
Communicate directly with customers regarding design requirements, clarifications, concerns, and project updates.
-
Review designs for accuracy, constructability, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness.
-
Recommend design or process improvements that strengthen quality, efficiency, and the overall customer experience.
-
Participate in continuing education, technical training, and professional development.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
Current Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
Minimum of four years of experience designing transmission and/or substation structures for the high-voltage utility industry.
Strong experience with PLS-POLE and STAAD.Pro.
Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, steel design, design codes, and utility structure requirements.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
Familiarity with AutoCAD is preferred.
Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering drawings, design criteria, and customer requirements.
Strong analytical, organizational, technical writing, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines with limited supervision.
Regular and reliable attendance.
You may be a great fit if you:
-
Want to design structures that support critical power infrastructure across the country.
-
Enjoy solving complex structural engineering problems.
-
Take pride in producing accurate, practical, and fabrication-ready designs.
-
Can balance technical requirements with schedule, cost, manufacturability, and customer needs.
-
Communicate confidently with customers, engineers, project managers, shop employees, and field personnel.
-
Are comfortable taking ownership of projects and making sound engineering decisions.
-
Value collaboration and enjoy seeing your designs become real, finished structures.
-
Look for ways to continuously improve designs, processes, and the customer experience.
This position is based in Pineville, Louisiana or Lafayette, Louisiana. Remote work may be considered based on the candidate’s level of relevant industry experience, demonstrated technical capabilities, and communication skills.
