Job description

We are seeking a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with hands-on HVAC and mechanical design experience to lead engineering projects for commercial, healthcare, institutional, and municipal facilities. This role combines technical design leadership with construction-phase support, overseeing projects from initial system design through final delivery while ensuring code compliance, system performance, and engineering quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC and mechanical systems that meet building requirements, performance standards, and applicable codes.
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations, assess ventilation requirements, select equipment, and evaluate energy efficiency.
  • Prepare mechanical plans, technical specifications, equipment schedules, engineering calculations, and construction documents.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record when assigned, ensuring technical accuracy and sound engineering decisions throughout the project.
  • Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Evaluate existing building conditions, regulatory requirements, and project constraints to develop effective design solutions.
  • Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and proposed design changes for technical compliance.
  • Conduct site visits, field evaluations, and construction observations to verify design intent and identify installation issues.
  • Resolve design conflicts, code concerns, and field challenges while maintaining system performance and compliance.
  • Evaluate alternative designs to improve cost efficiency, energy performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Support commissioning, inspections, testing, and final project handover.
  • Sign and seal engineering documents as authorized by licensure and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and ensure deliverables meet project specifications and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with clients, architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout project execution.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience; 10+ years preferred.
  • Direct HVAC and mechanical MEP design experience in commercial, healthcare, institutional, municipal, or comparable facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of load calculations, ventilation design, HVAC equipment selection, energy efficiency, and mechanical codes.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or equivalent mechanical design software.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, construction drawings, specifications, and equipment schedules.
  • Understanding of building system integration and multidisciplinary design coordination.
  • Strong technical judgment, analytical skills, troubleshooting abilities, and communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating with building owners, architects, contractors, and engineering teams.
  • Healthcare, municipal, institutional, veterinary, or other complex facility experience preferred.

Important Qualification: Substantial hands-on HVAC and mechanical design experience is essential. Candidates whose backgrounds focus primarily on project management, administration, or coordination without significant design involvement will not qualify.

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Retirement savings plan with company contribution.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Continuing education and professional development support.
  • Opportunity to engineer complex commercial and institutional facilities.
  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Long-term career development and advancement opportunities.
