This is a content-discovery role at the center of our newsroom. The successful candidate will identify breaking and developing stories, gather and verify information, coordinate coverage, and turn that information into timely, accurate content for broadcast, KATU.com, streaming, and social platforms.
We are looking for someone with sharp news judgment, strong writing skills, and a natural curiosity about what is happening in our community. The ideal candidate can build sources, spot stories early, communicate clearly, and work calmly under deadline pressure.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor agency and government websites, social media, alert systems, public records, news partners, and trusted sources for breaking and developing news
- Develop contacts, make beat checks, and identify local story ideas and follow-ups
- Gather, verify, and organize information, video, photos, documents, and other assets for newsroom coverage
- Coordinate crews and resources as coverage develops
- Write, edit, publish, and update clear, compelling content for KATU.com and station social-media platforms
- Create strong headlines, social copy, and audience-focused digital coverage
- Communicate developing information and coverage plans with reporters, producers, photographers, and digital staff
- Ensure all content meets AP Style and journalistic, legal, and ethical standards
Qualifications:
- At least one year of assignment-desk or digital newsroom experience; strong journalism experience as a reporter, producer, photographer, or similar role will also be considered
- Strong writing, editing, news judgment, organization, and communication skills
- Experience publishing content for websites and social-media platforms
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform well under pressure
- Knowledge of AP Style and a commitment to accuracy and ethics
- Experience with newsroom and content-management systems preferred
- Familiarity with Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field preferred
